There are generally three ways you can get started with e-cigarettes. The first is to buy disposable e-cigarettes, which can only be used for limited time before they need to be discarded. You can also purchase regular, non-disposable e-cigarette parts and accessories separately. Lastly, you can buy something called a starter kit, which will contain everything you need to get started in one convenient package.
Let’s take a look at each of your options in further detail:
- Buying disposable e-cigarettes.
You can purchase disposable e-cigarettes at a convenience store or online for about $5 or $6. It is best to stick to well-known brands such as V2 Cigs, Smokeless Image and Vapor4Life. Each disposable e-cigarette will last about the equivalent of a pack of regular cigarettes. Disposable e-cigarettes are relatively expensive compared to other e-cigarette options, and you should therefore only use them when you are trying out e-cigarettes for the first time or want to experiment with a different brand. In all other cases, you would end up saving money by purchasing non-disposable e-cigarettes instead.
We recommend disposable e-cigs from Smokeless Image.
- Buying regular e-cigarette parts and accessories separately.
At a minimum, you will need to buy three things to get started:
- E-cigarette batteries
In most cases, it is a good idea to buy two batteries. This way, you can recharge one battery while using the other one.
- Cartomizers or cartridges
If you are just starting out, make sure you buy pre-filled cartomizers instead of blank ones unless you plan to fill the cartomizers yourself with e-liquid before using them. Cartomizers come in many flavors, such as tobacco, vanilla, coffee and menthol. If you are switching over from regular smoking, you may want to get a tobacco flavor, as many users find it easier to transition to a familiar flavor.
- A battery charger
There are many battery chargers you can choose from — USB chargers, wall chargers, car chargers, etc.
Keep in mind, the three components above will only give you a bare-bones setup. You may want to consider these additional items:
- A carrying case
You can find metal cases that snap shut, leather cases with zippers, and many other varieties. Your case should be able to hold at least two batteries and several cartomizers. Having a case is essential if you do a lot of traveling.
- A portable battery charger
These devices are about the same size as a pack of cigarettes and allow you to charge your batteries when there is no nearby outlet or USB port. The charger itself is powered by a large battery that needs to be recharged from time to time.

- Buying a starter kit.
Starter kits are available for every budget, ranging in price from $19.95 to $200 or more. In our opinion, obtaining a starter kit is the best way to get started with e-cigarettes. Most often, a starter kit will end up costing you less than what you would pay if you bought each item separately. In addition, it can be very convenient to receive everything you need in one handy kit.
